I’m a single mother and I know exactly how difficult it is to guarantee everything our children need at school. Uniform, material, transportation, food…

Everything weighs on the budget, especially when we are facing financial difficulties.

That’s why I decided to share here what I discovered about school aid, a social benefit that can make a big difference in the lives of those who need it most.

What is School Aid?

School aid is support offered by municipal, state or federal programs, aimed at low-income families.

The idea is to ensure that children and adolescents have decent access to education, without a lack of money preventing them from going to school.

This type of aid can cover different needs: from the purchase of school supplies to student scholarships or free transport.

In some cities, there are even distribution programs for uniforms or complete back-to-school kits.

Who can receive it?

Priority is generally given to families registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico).

If you receive Bolsa Família, for example, you may already be eligible for this type of support. Other common criteria are:

Therefore, the first step is: check that you have your CadÚnico up to date. Many people lose benefits due to outdated data.

How do I apply for school aid?

The process may vary depending on your city or state. Here’s a general step-by-step guide that might help you:

  1. Go to the nearest CRAS (Social Assistance Reference Center);
  2. Inform that you want to know about school assistance or back-to-school programs;
  3. Take your documents (CPF, ID, proof of residence, and proof of children enrolled in school);
  4. Ask to see if there is a program available in your municipality;
  5. If it exists, CRAS will indicate the next steps for registration.

⚠️ In some cities, the request is made online or via the local government app. Always confirm the official source.

What did I do?

In my case, I discovered the program through my daughter’s school. The director told me about an aid that the city hall provided for the purchase of school supplies, and all you had to do was be on CadÚnico to place the order. I went back, updated my registration, submitted the documents to CRAS, and within two weeks I received the amount directly into the Caixa account.

It seems like little, but it was what allowed me to buy everything she needed to return to school with dignity.

Important tip

If you are not already in CadÚnico, try to sign up. Even if you don’t have school aid available in your city right now, registering makes you eligible to receive this and other social benefits as soon as they are released.

Conclusion

Seeking school aid is no shame. It is the right of those who fight every day to offer the best to their children, even in the midst of difficulties. Staying informed and going after it is what keeps us going.
