When I found out I was pregnant, I felt a mixture of joy and worry. Joy to begin a new phase of life.

Worry because my financial situation was not the best.

It was then that I started researching what help for pregnant women exists in Brazil — and I discovered that there are ways to receive support at this very delicate time.

If you are pregnant, without income or in a vulnerable situation, this article will show you what pregnancy assistance is, who may be entitled to it, how to apply and where to seek assistance.

What is Pregnancy Assistance?

The so-called “pregnancy aid” is not a single benefit with that name, but rather a combination of rights and social support aimed at pregnant women, especially those in low-income situations.

They include:

In some places, there may also be regional or emergency benefits, such as gas vouchers, psychological support and free transport to appointments.

Who may be eligible?

The focus of the programs is to serve pregnant women with a low-income profile, especially if the woman:

Even if you are not receiving any benefits yet, you can seek guidance and start registering to receive support as soon as possible.

How the Bolsa Família benefit works

The Bolsa Família has a specific component called the Variable Benefit for Pregnant Women. If you are pregnant and your CadÚnico is up to date, you can receive an extra amount of R$50 per month for up to 9 months, as long as you can prove prenatal care.

For this:

  1. Go to the SUS health unit and have your first prenatal consultation
  2. The health center team registers your pregnancy in the Ministry of Health system
  3. This information is cross-referenced with your CPF and CadÚnico
  4. The benefit starts to be paid in Caixa Tem, together with the value of Bolsa Família

This value can be maintained even after birth, if you are taking care of the child.

What if I don’t receive Bolsa Família?

Even without being on Bolsa Família, every pregnant woman can receive free care through the SUS and have the right to:

But to access other types of assistance (such as food or housing), the ideal is to be registered with CadÚnico and receive assistance at CRAS.

Where to register?

If you don’t have a CadÚnico yet, look for the CRAS (Social Assistance Reference Center) closest to your home with:

When attending, tell your situation honestly. The objective is to include you in public policies that are available to those who need it most.

Is there any other assistance?

Yes. In addition to Bolsa Família and SUS services, some cities offer:

Birth Aid

Financial assistance or kits with layette for mothers in vulnerable situations. Generally paid after birth, upon presentation of the birth certificate.

Basic Basket or Food Card

Many pregnant women get temporary help with food during pregnancy, offered by local social projects or city halls.

Housing Referral

In cases of abandonment, violence or social risk, pregnant women can be sent to support homes, shelters or social rental programs.

Eventual Benefit

When the situation is very urgent, CRAS may grant a temporary amount of support for pregnant women — this depends on the municipality’s policy.

My experience

When I arrived at CRAS for the first time, I had no idea about everything that existed. I was nervous, insecure, but I was welcomed. They helped me update my CadÚnico, included my pregnancy in the system and explained how to access the nearest health center to follow up on prenatal care.

Two months later, I started receiving the extra amount of pregnancy aid, in addition to a food card from the city hall. It didn’t solve all my problems, but it was the relief I needed at that moment.

Conclusion

If you are pregnant, without a steady job or experiencing difficulties, pregnancy assistance could be the beginning of the care you deserve.

Update your CadÚnico, look for the CRAS in your city and start prenatal care at the health center. No mother should face this phase alone. The paths may seem difficult, but with guidance, support and courage, you will make it.
